Question
How far ahead can you predict a football match?
Short answer: Team strength is stable weeks out, but the details that decide matches (line-ups, late news) settle in the final 24-48 hours — which is exactly when our official predictions are made.
What is stable early
Relative team strength moves slowly: ratings a month out are usually within a few probability points of ratings on matchday. That is why season-long projections are possible at all.
What only settles late
Confirmed line-ups, injuries, rotation after midweek games, weather and motivation (a team already safe or already relegated plays differently). These shift probabilities by meaningful margins in the final day.
Our schedule
Official predictions are generated 24-48 hours before kick-off, refreshed once in the final six hours, and locked one hour out. After full time they are graded in public — the timeline exists so the number you see is the number the model believed at the deadline.
FAQ
Are matchday predictions more accurate?
Marginally, at best — the late information mostly confirms the rating-based baseline.
Why not predict months ahead?
Fixtures are known, but line-ups, form and squads are not; the honest answer that far out is a wide distribution, not a pick.
When is today's prediction ready?
24-48 h before kick-off on the match page and the today page.
