Both teams to score (BTTS) explained

One question — will both ends of the scoreboard get used? — with more nuance behind it than you'd expect.

Definition and examples

BTTS = yes means each team scores at least once. 1–1, 2–1, 3–2, 2–2: yes. 1–0, 2–0, 0–0: no. The final result is irrelevant — the loser scoring counts exactly the same as the winner scoring.

What drives it

Two attacking sides, or two poor defences, push BTTS up; a dominant defence or a blunt attack pulls it down. It is the most style-sensitive of the markets: the same two teams can be 65% BTTS against each other and 40% against different opposition. Key attacking absences move it sharply — another reason to ask the AI about the specific match.

How the model computes it

The Dixon-Coles Poisson model produces a probability for every scoreline. BTTS is the sum of all lines where both totals are at least one. Because it reuses the same matrix as the 1X2 and over/under numbers, everything you see for a match is internally consistent — no cherry-picked contradictions.

Why it hovers near 50%

Across most leagues, a bit more than half of all matches see both teams score. So a 52% is neutral, a 65% is a strong style signal, and a 40% points to a defensive grind. Deviations — not the absolute number — are where the reading lies.

Graded in public

Footalytics tracks BTTS as one of its four official markets: every official prediction's BTTS line is locked before kick-off and settled against the real score on the accuracy dashboard, alongside 1X2, over/under and exact score.

FAQ

What does BTTS mean?

"Both teams to score" — each side scores at least once in the match. The result (win/draw/loss) doesn't matter.

Does a 2–2 count as BTTS?

Yes — both teams scored, so it is BTTS-yes. It also happens to be over 2.5, but the two are separate questions about the same match.

How is the BTTS probability calculated?

Sum the model's scoreline-distribution probabilities for every score where both teams score at least once — automatically consistent with the same match's other numbers.

Where do I see BTTS accuracy?

On the public accuracy dashboard, next to the 1X2, over/under and exact-score rates — settled from real final scores.
